War, economic crisis and the rise of right wing political forces in previous periods in history have led either to revolution or fascism and counter-revolution. If one studies the rise of Hitler in Germany and World War II it was precisely this combination that was in place. Looking closely at the American situation we look very much like Germany in the early 1930’s. Add to this a weak President , who came to office with overwhelming popular support and than proceeded to squander it on the altar of compromise with right wing Republicans, we have a bitches brew of dangerous possibilities. The answer to the right and the danger of fascism is a peoples program of radical democratic changes to the political economy of the nation. At the center of these demands must be the call to end America’s many wars of aggression, cut the military budget by 75% over the next ten years and an all out attack upon white supremacy and anti-black racism. A massive movement against poverty and unemployment has to be created. We should look to the 1960’s and 70’s to learn from, but we must go well beyond that period in our radicalism and militancy. Our understanding of this moment has to include the recognition that capitalism has failed, is in the process of destroying itself (and taking us down with it) and must be replaced by a socialist, humane, people before profits, humanity before billionaires social economy.
