My contention is that the Obama administration, in its alignment with the military and financial elites has abandoned its implied promise of a for the lack of a better term, "paradigm shift" in policy and instead has shown less inclination for originality in policy development than possibly the previous Bush administration. Obama's administration, to me suggests, an abandonment of the American middle and lower classes. Additionally, no examination of Obama's presidency will be complete without looking at Obama, the individual. Obama's upbringing, his nurturing, the social and cultural environment that produced him produced an individual who should have never been expected to be anything but exhibiting an "insulting and practiced indifference to black suffering" as the author asserts. Obama is nothing more than the creation of a political culture still uncomfortable with African American intellect; but, which saw the potential in increasing their control over the country in promoting the "right" African American, one who would be easily "malleable". Second, whose race would be sufficient to gather support among African Americans, Finally, a candidate who had a background with which whites would identify.
